Coyne Schofield scores a hatty and the NWHL season kicks off

NWHL

Saturday, Oct. 5

Buffalo Beauts beat Connecticut Whale; 3 - 1

Beauts: Lenka Curmova (Marie-Jo Pelletier, Corinne Buie) [PP], Brooke Stacey (Ashley Birdsall, Iveta Klimasova), Buie (Taylor Accursi) [EN]
Whale: Grace Klienbach (Sarah Hughson, Elena Orlando)

The first goal of the 2019-20 NWHL season was scored on the power play by defender Lenka Curmova. It was also her first NWHL goal.

The game came down to the final three minutes as it was tied until the Whale were unable to keep the puck in their net. Stacey won the foot race to the puck and scored to put the Beauts up 2-1. They added an empty net goal to secure their first win.

Beauts goaltender Mariah Fujimagari saw 30 total shots for her first NWHL win. Whale goaltender Sonjia Shelly got her first NWHL start making 13 saves on 15 shots.

Boston Pride beat Metropolitan Riveters; 4 - 2

Pride: Jillian Dempsey (Mallory Souliotis), Tori Sullivan (Lauren Kelly), Dempsey (Christina Putigna, Kelly), McKenna Brand (Dempsey, Kaleigh Fratkin)
Riveters: Kendall Cornine (Mallory Rushton, Cassie Dunne), Madison Packer (Colleen Murphy, Brooke Baker) [PP]

Dempsey looked to be in midseason form with three points in their opening games.

Eleven penalties were taken in the game but that wasn’t even the difference maker. The Riveters, up 2-1, killed off a 5-on-3 about five minutes into the third period, before letting in two goals in less than a minute to give up the lead. That would be all for the Riveters as the Pride got an empty net to secure the win.

Both teams had to replace their entire goaltending corps this offseason, leaving some questions. Pride goaltender Lovisa Selander got her first NWHL win making 23 saves along the way. Riveters goaltender Sam Walther got peppered with shots, seeing 39 in an impressive showing.

The consolation game was tight until the very end. Marvin’s tipped goal and Keller’s rocket from the point where Flanagan’s only goals as they couldn’t overcome team Lamoureux’s cohesiveness for the full 60.

Team Stecklein beat Team Knight; 5 - 4

Stecklein: Emily Janiga, Kendall Coyne Schofield, Hannah Brandt, Coyne Schofield, Coyne Schofield
Knight: Marie Phillip Poulin, Genevieve Bannon, Jill Saulnier, Karell Emard

Coyne Schofield led the way with the second Dream Gap hat trick.

There was a length goal review on Bannon’s goal after confusion over if the whistle blew or not. The goal was ruled good cutting Team Stecklein’s lead to one. Coyne Schofield was having none of that and came out flying to give her team a two-goal lead again. A late goal by Emard tried to get Team Knight back into but they couldn’t get anything past goaltender Kassidy Sauvé.

Team Stecklein took home the Dunkin’ Women’s Hockey Showcase championship banner.
