The Pittsburgh Penguins announced yesterday that they will host four college teams at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, on Jan. 4-5 in a new ‘Battle at the Burgh’ tournament.

The teams featured will be the defending national championship University of Wisconsin along with Robert Morris, Colgate, and Northeastern. The tickets will cost $20 per day, with two games per day.

The game layout will be as follows:

  • Saturday, Jan. 4: No. 4 Northeastern vs. No. 11 Colgate at 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Jan. 4: No. 1 Wisconsin vs. No. 13 Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Jan. 5: Consolation game at 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, Jan. 5: Championship game at 4 p.m.

The Penguins have shown heavy interest in women’s hockey over the past few years, hosting a few NWHL games, the 2017 NWHL All-Star Game, as well as last month’s joint USA-Canada weeklong training camp which included two sellout exhibition games. Wisconsin’s head coach Mark Johnson is a former Penguin player as well.

Robert Morris University is the local representation at the tournament. They are currently 10-6-2 and are looking to win their fourth College Hockey America Conference regular season championship. Northeastern, who are 14-2 so far, is another team looking to win consecutive conference titles. They are two-time defending Hockey East champions.

Colgate (9-8-3) and University of Wisconsin (18-1-1) have both made recent NCAA championship final appearances. Colgate took second place in 2018, and the Badgers are reigning champions currently. Wisconsin also claims the NCAA’s top three scorers in Daryl Watts, Sophie Shirley and Abby Roque.

These are four very talented teams with high accolades in their respective conference which makes for a great tournament. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
