Staturday: CWHL and NWHL All-Stars

One weekend, two All-Star games. This week we will turn our attention to the skaters and goaltenders playing in the CWHL and NWHL All-Star games.

CWHL

  • Last year the Boston Blades’ leading point scorers had seven points (Megan Myers, Erin Kickham). This year Kate Leary has 11 points for the Blades and All-Star Meghan Grieves has 10. Grieves leads Boston in power play goals and even strength assists.
  • Inferno star Rebecca Johnston has stayed healthy this season and is burning box scores up. She has 21 points in 18 games this year. She is one of four skaters on Calgary averaging more than a point per game this season./
  • Brampton defender Jocelyn Larocque is tied with Tara Watchorn as the lowest-scoring skaters (four points) in the ASG. She’s also one of the most physical and feared. Larocque is the most penalized player in Toronto today.
  • Montreal’s Cathy Chartrand and Brampton’s Laura Fortino are the two highest-scoring defenders in the CWHL All-Star game. Both players have 17 points this year but Fortino has hit her mark in four fewer games than Chartrand.
  • All-Star captain Carlee Campbell is the only All-Star that was taken after the fourth round in the CWHL Draft. The first-year blue line star was taken in the 11th round by the Furies in 2016./

NWHL

  • Three of the biggest names participating in the NWHL All-Star weekend, including both captains, have all missed significant time this season. But Kessel, Steadman and Knight have all made big impacts for their teams./
  • New York Riveters’ center Janine Weber is the highest-scoring skater not participating in the All-Star game. The Austrian native has 15 points in 14 games with the Riveters this year. She was an All-Star last season.
  • Pride rookie Alex Carpenter has more shorthanded goals (three) than 52 NWHL skaters (who have appeared in at least one game) have total goals this year.
  • This year 14 Canadians have played in at least one game in the NWHL and four of them (Harrison Browne, Kelly Babstock, Ashley Johnston and Kaleigh Fratkin) are playing in the All-Star Game.
  • Half of the NWHL players that are listed at 5’10” or above are playing in the All-Star Game. Katie Fitzgerald is not only the only rookie goaltender participating in the special weekend, she is also the tallest goalie in the league./

NCAA Division I

  • Last year 11 different skaters broke the 50 point mark in women’s college hockey. Kelly Pannek of the University of Minnesota is the first player to 50 points (she has 55) this season.
  • Cornell defender Micah Hart has scored all five of her goals this year on the power play. She leads all blueliners (tied with Julia Fedeski and Erin Connolly) in the nation in power play goals. Erin O’Connor is the only other defenseman on Cornell with a PPG./
  • The University of Maine has scored 31 goals this year in losses, which is the most by any team in NCAA Division I women’s hockey. How many goals do they have in wins? Yep, 31.
  • Kassidy Sauve’s amazing sophomore season continues. She is just 11 shots shy of facing 1,000 this year and is third in the nation with a .944 save percentage. Sauve has an individual record of 11-14-4.
  • Clarkson senior Cayley Mercer averages just shy of six shots on goal per game. She leads the nation with 168 shots in 30 games this year. She leads the Golden Knights in goals, assists, power play goals and game winning goals./
