Staturday with Mike, 1/28: Can’t beat Boston

We’re almost in February and the Boston Pride are still undefeated.

CWHL

  • The Brampton Thunder have the longest winning streak in the CWHL. They have won four straight games and have climbed their way into third place in the standings.
  • Caroline Oullette is the only forward in the CWHL to play in every game for her team this year without taking a penalty. She’s also second in the league (behind Jess Jones) in power play points.
  • The Calgary Inferno’s top pick of the 2016 Draft, Emerance Maschmeyer, recorded her first CWHL shutout last weekend. She now has the best save percentage in the league./
  • Iya Gavrilova has points in four straight games for Calgary. She is now running away with the rookie/first-year player goal scoring lead. Gavrilova has 10 goals in 16 games this year.
  • Charline Labonté and Liz Knox both have four shutouts this year for Montreal and Brampton. The other eight goaltenders that have appeared in at least one game this CWHL season have five shutouts combined./

NWHL

  • Before scoring a hat trick and picking up an assist on Friday night Haley Skarupa had gone six games without scoring a goal. Skarupa scored an even strength goal, a power play goal and a shorthanded goal all in the third period to complete her second NWHL hat trick.
  • Lauren Wash scored her first goal of the season on Friday night. She is one of eight skaters on the Riveters to score her first professional goal this season./
  • Alex Carpenter is on fire. She now has five multi-point games in 11 appearances as a rookie with the Boston Pride./
  • Meghan Duggan had her first multi-goal game as a Pride on Friday night. Captain America’s first NWHL hat trick and helped the Pride dismantle the Whale 8-4. Duggan had six goals in 13 games last year in Buffalo. This year she has eight goals in 11 games with Boston.
  • Amanda Kessel had two goals and an assist for the Riveters in her third NWHL regular season game on Friday night. Her goals were he first and second as a professional. /

NCAA Division I

  • Northeastern junior McKenna Brand has taken over the goal scoring lead. Only two of the 21 goals she has scored this year have come on the power play.
  • Providence just can’t stay out of the box this year. They’ve had to kill 17 more penalties than RMU, who are second in the nation in penalty kill attempts. /
  • The University of Wisconsin, on average, out-shoot their opponents by a margin of 22.52 shots. Last year they led the nation in shot differential with an average of 22.20. To put that into context, this season Brown, RIT, Dartmouth, Ohio State, St. Cloud State and Lindenwood all average fewer than 22.52 shots per game.
  • Victoria Hanson of Boston University has faced more shots in overtime than any other goaltender in the nation (23). She has stopped all of them.
  • Penn State senior Laura Bowman leads the nation in goals and points in games lost by her team. Eight of her 15 goals this year have come in games that the Nittany Lions have lost. /
