Actual legend Jennifer Botterill becomes an analyst for MSG’s New York Islanders coverage

The world’s only two-time Patty Kazmaier winner will join former teammate AJ Mleczko in a Harvard hockey takeover of MSG’s studio.

Islanders fans, try not to be too shocked when you turn on your televisions this Tuesday and see a true hockey legend on your screen. That’s right: Jennifer Botterill is joining MSG’s team as a studio analyst, starting on Nov. 12

Botterill tweeted about her new position early on Monday afternoon:

Botterill, a retired Team Canada forward, will join fellow Harvard teammate (and Team USA ‘98 Olympic gold medalist) AJ Mleczko, who joined MSG’s team as studio analyst in October. Mleczko also made broadcast history earlier this year as the first woman to call an NHL playoff game.

While this may be a sign that the Ivy League is trying to infiltrate our homes by way of our screens, it’s possible that broadcasting is just a popular career choice for all hockey players.  Meghan Duggan, Monique Lamoureux-Morando, Haley Skarupa, and many, many more players have held similar jobs in analytics.

Botterill was born in Ottawa and raised in Winnipeg, but chose to come to the US for her illustrious collegiate career with the Harvard Crimson. In addition to being the only two-time Patty Kaz winner, she scored the game-winning goal of Harvard’s only national championship in 1999.

She also was a major star of Canada’s national team. Botterill made appearances from 1999-2010 and won countless titles, including one silver and three Olympic gold medals. Most recently, you might remember her assist on Marie-Philip Poulin’s first goal in the gold medal game in Vancouver.

Botterill played a few seasons with the CWHL and retired from the sport in 2011. Her impact as one of the major pioneers of women’s ice hockey international competition remains relevant today. Beyond her experience in play, she has ample broadcast experience and has worked for CBC, TSN, and Sportsnet.

Botterill will make her first MSG appearance during MSG’s coverage of Tuesday’s Islanders v Canucks game at 7pm.
