The showcase will feature an all-new format that eliminates the skills competitions of old and introduces a round-robin style of games between three all-star teams. Each round-robin game will feature ten minutes of 5-on-5 action, five minutes of 3-on-3, and then a shootout. The team that finishes the round-robin showcase with the most goals scored throughout all segments of competition will be crowned the PHF All-Star champions.
“It’s only fitting that the PHF’s new era introduces a new format that will showcase our phenomenal stars in our newest market and in front of passionate fans during this historical first season north of the border,” said PHF Commissioner Tyler Tumminia in the federation’s release.
The all-star selection process will be conducted in three stages; first, PHF players will be polled to select the three all-star captains from their peers. All six PHF coaches will then select the thirty all-stars to participate in the showcase, followed by a fan vote to determine three additional all-stars and an extra goaltender to take part. A virtual draft will take place following the selection processes for each captain to build their roster of 12 for competition.
In years past, the PHF’s All-Star event has been a weekend that featured a skills competition and then a game between two all-star teams. Previous events have been held in league markets such as Buffalo (2016) and Boston (2020), as well as non-league markets Pittsburgh (2017) and Nashville (2019), along with Minnesota (2018), a market that would be inducted into the league the following season.
The 2022 All-Star Showcase will be streamed on ESPN+ in the United States, on TSN Direct for Canadian subscribers, and on ESPN-affiliated platforms outside of North America.
