Shannon Szabados signs with Buffalo Beauts

The Beauts aren’t done shocking literally everyone in the entire world everywhere

That collective gasp you just heard was from the women’s hockey world because the Buffalo Beauts signed Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados.

Yes, that Szabados. The woman with two Olympic golds and one Olympic silver who has been playing professional hockey against men.

To say this was unexpected would be the understatement of the century. Between Team Canada appearances, Szabados has only played in men’s leagues thus far. She is the first female goaltender to ever record a shutout in a men’s league — she shutout the Huntsville Havoc, an SPHL team, on Dec. 26, 2015. She’s a three-time Olympian and has played in four World Championships for Canada.

Szabados is a superstar. A superstar from the Canadian women’s national team. Her signing with the Beauts is a game changer not just for Buffalo, but for the NWHL and professional women’s hockey.

She’s scheduled to appear in front of the media in Buffalo tomorrow. We’ll have more for you then, and once we all stop shaking.
