NCAA Poll: Gopher Holes

The season is really on the way now, and our impressions are being formed.

Everyone but the Ivies have returned to action this week. We had some exciting results, along with some blowouts.

1. Wisconsin (4-0-0), 85 (6) — Last poll: 1

  • Last week: W 4-0 @ Merrimack (10/1), W 5-0 @ Merrimack (10/2)
  • Coming Week: v St. Cloud State (10/9, 10/10)/

A rare trip east saw the Badgers take on one of the bottom teams in Hockey East and take care of business. Next week they take on one of the worst WCHA foes at home.

2. Northeastern (2-0-0), 80 (2) — Last poll: 2

  • Last week: W 5-0 @ Holy Cross (10/1), W 6-0 v Holy Cross (10/2)
  • Coming Week: @ Boston University (10/8), @ Providence (10/9)/

Like Wisconsin, the Huskies played weak opposition and dominated both games. This week they will travel for a pair against two teams that are competing for home ice in Hockey East.

3. Ohio State (4-0-0), 79 (1) — Last poll: 3

  • Last week: W 4-2 @ Minnesota (10/1), W 4-1 @ Minnesota (10/2)
  • Coming Week: No Games/

Ohio State had high hopes coming into this season. They delivered on their annual trip to Minneapolis with a pair of dominant wins over the Gophers making them this season’s first ‘Belle’s of the Ball.’

4. Colgate (4-0-0), 60 — Last poll: 6

  • Last week: W 4-2 v Mercyhurst (10/1), W 5-2 v Mercyhurst (10/2)
  • Coming Week: @ Vermont (10/9, 10/10)/

The Raiders took care of business. Next up is a pair of games they should win but will test them a little.

5. Minnesota-Duluth (1-1-0), 42 — Last poll: T-4

  • Last week: W 7-0 @ Minnesota State (10/1), L 2-4 @ Minnesota State (10/2)
  • Coming Week: v Minnesota (10/8, 10/9)/

Duluth won their first game against Mankato convincingly but then had a devastating loss. While they typically will have a bad loss like this later in the season, it is not a great start to their campaign. They will try to rebound as they host Minnesota.

6. Minnesota (0-2-0), 37 — Last poll: T-4

  • Last week: L 2-4 v Ohio State (10/1), L 1-4 v Ohio State (10/2)
  • Coming Week: @ Minnesota-Duluth (10/8, 10/9)/

On the other side of the Buckeyes big win is Minnesota’s pair of unfortunate home loses. The Gophers the only team in the state of Minnesota that has not won a game yet this season. They look to change that in Duluth.

7. Princeton (0-0-0), 26 — Last poll: 8

  • Last week: No Games
  • Coming Week: No Games /

The Tigers are still off due to the Ivies starting later.

8. Cornell (0-0-0), 25 — Last poll: 9

  • Last week: No Games
  • Coming Week: No Games/

Cornell is yet to play but still has high expectations.

9. Boston College (2-0-0), 23 — Last poll: 7

  • Last week: W 2-1 OT @ Penn State (9/30), W 2-1 @ Penn State (10/1)
  • Coming Week: @ Merrimack (10/9)/

Eagles fans were a little disappointed by their play in game one as they won in overtime, but they looked a little better in game two. This week sees a trip to Andover for BC.

10. Quinnipiac (4-0-0), 16 — Last poll: ARV

  • Last week: W 9-1 v Long Island (10/1), W 4-0 v Long Island (10/2)
  • Coming Week: v St. Anselm (10/8, 10/9)/

Quinnipiac is cleaning up against weaker opponents and will keep that up when the host St. Anselm.
