Riveters re-sign D’Oench, add Chelsea Ziadie

Two Harvard alum sign with defending Isobel Cup Champions

Today the Riveters added forward Miye D’Oench and defender Chelsea Ziadie to the 2018-19 roster. D’Oench returns for her third season while Ziadie will make her professional debut with the Riveters.

“I can’t wait to get back to Barnabas to defend our Cup in front of the best fans in the league,” said D’Oench in the league press release. She has a career 13 goal and 17 assists in 32 career appearances for the Riveters. D’Oench posted All-Star worthy numbers early last year, but was interrupted by an injury suffered at the Team NWHL exhibition series against Team USA.

Riveters fans should be excited to see D’Oench back on the ice, especially if (when?) Gruschow re-signs. Before her injury, D’Oench skated with Gruschow and Bray Ketchum on the top line. Neither Gruschow nor Ketchum has re-signed yet.

Nevertheless, D’Oench will be reunited with Amanda Kessel. The gold medalist returns to the Riveters for her second NWHL season. Injuries kept Kessel off the ice, but if both she and D’Oench return healthy, that Riveters could have a lethal top line.

Ziadie is a Quebec-native who, like D’Oench, played college hockey at Harvard. “I’m incredibly excited to begin my professional hockey career with the Riveters,” shared Ziadie.  “I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to join such a talented team and successful organization.”

D’Oench and Ziandie have the opportunity to play multiple out-of-market games with the defending champions. This preseason, the Riveters will travel to Sweden for the Champions Series against 2018 SDHL champions Luleå Hockey/MSSK. The New Jersey team will then have the honor of being the first home opponent for the Minnesota Whitecaps.

“From NHL partnerships to the expansion to Minnesota, the league has taken huge strides in the past year,” commented D’Oench. “It’s an amazing time to be a part of this sport. I’m so excited to return to the Riveters this coming season.”

Finally, the league announced today the Riveters and the Connecticut Whale will play the second-ever NWHL regular season game at the Mario Lemieux Center in partnership with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins practice facility also hosted the 2017 All-Star Game where All-Star captain Amanda Kessel led her team to victory  when she recorded the first NWHL All-Star Game hat trick.

In 2018, Riveters defender Kelsey Koelzer recorded a hat trick, while Beauts forward Haley Scamurra scored a hatty plus one more to lead her team to victory.

With these two signings, the Riveters now have 11 players inked for the upcoming season. The Riveters will once again play at the Barnabas Health Hockey House as they enter the second of a three year strategic alliance with the New Jersey Devils.

While the NWHL schedule has not officially been released, reports are the Riveters will host the Minnesota Whitecaps for a weekend series October 20-21.
