The PWHPA continues to announce players joining the organization’s ranks ahead of the 2020-21 season. We’re here with our biweekly roundup designed to get you acquainted with the new additions and the players returning for their sophomore season with the association.

MacKenzie Ebel, forward, Princeton University

Alberta native MacKenzie Ebel has played more of a bottom six/depth role for the Tigers since her first year in the orange and black, when she potted just one point — a goal — in a win over Brown. Since then, she’s tallied 12 total points, reaching a career high in goals (2) and assists (6) for 8 points her sophomore season. During her second and third years at Princeton, she played a much grittier role, racking up 52 penalty minutes over 63 games, so she’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. Ebel was on track for a promising senior campaign when an injury cut her season short just six games into 2019-20.

Samantha Isbell, forward, Mercyhurst University

On a team loaded with talent and often headlining the CHA leaderboard, Samantha Isbell has been a powerful top six forward for the Mercyhurst Lakers over the past four years. In her senior season, she totaled six goals and a team leading 25 assists for a career high 31 points, almost double her production in each of her previous campaigns. In 2019-20, Isbell was named to the All-CHA second team, her first honor of the sort after finishing third in scoring on the Lakers and sixth in the CHA. She was apart of Mercyhurst’s two most recent CHA Championship rosters — and she’s got some pretty incredible moves, if this game winner against Syracuse in 2018 is any indication.

Megan Buchanan, goaltender, Island Surge (SCWHL)

Megan Buchanan spent four years with Chatham University, a school with a Division III squad based out of Pittsburgh. During her senior year alone with the Cougars, Buchanan set a number of records — including season and career shutouts (4) and career saves (2368). In 2017, she took her talents to the South Coast Women’s Hockey League where she played 11 games with the Island Surge in Victoria, British Columbia. Though she only played in eleven games for the Surge, her team finished the season with the worst goal differential in the league (-48). Buchanan herself put up some pretty solid numbers comparable to those of her goalie partners — a stable .903 SV% and 3.90 GAA.

Deziray De Sousa, forward, Boston University

Posting career highs across the board in her senior season with the Terriers, Deziray De Sousa has become a force to be reckoned with in Hockey East. She was on fire all season long, recording six of her twelve assists on the season during a four game hot streak in mid-November 2019. Prior to arriving at BU, De Sousa competed and excelled at provincial Hockey Canada tournaments with her native Team Quebec — winning a gold medal at the 2014 Canada Games and earning U18 Canadian Nationals MVP for a game at the U18 Hockey Canada camps.

Molly Jenkins, goaltender, University of Windsor (U SPORTS)

Goaltender Molly Jenkins spent her three of her four years at the University of Windsor in neither the back-up nor the starter role, instead apart of a reliable tandem that evenly split most of the work load. She’s demonstrated remarkable success and improvement between the pipes for the Lancers, going from a .824 SV% during her first year of eligibility to a solid .916 SV% her senior season, with her GAA totals following a similar trend.

Madison Field, forward, EHV Sabres Wien (EWHL)

An alumna of Ohio State, Madison Field will join former teammate Jincy Dunne as one of two former Buckeyes currently committed to the PWHPA for 2020-21. During her tenure with Ohio State, Field consistently ranked in the top five offensive producers on the team, and only dipped below 20 points on the season once, during her freshman season. In 2019-20, she launched her professional career overseas with EHV Sabres Wien, playing 18 games and tallying 33 points, good for second on the squad. Her international experience is limited to one appearance with Canada at the 2015 U18 Women’s World Championship, where she captured silver alongside PWHPA commits Ryleigh Houston, Micah Zandee-Hart, and Kristin O’Neill. Also of note, Field was also apart of the Ohio State roster that advanced to the 2018 Frozen Four, and recorded five goals in the team’s two wins over Minnesota State in the WCHA quarterfinals the same year.

Breanna Scarpaci, defender, Boston University

Announced late this week, shutdown defender Breanna Scarpaci will join former teammate with BU Deziray De Sousa with the PWHPA. Over her four year tenure with Boston University, Scarpaci totaled 3 goals and 21 assists, good for 24 points. In her senior season alone, she ranked first on her team in blocked shots and third in Hockey East with 75. Though an injury stalled her sophomore season, she came back swinging and posted one of the most offensively productive years of her career.
