NWHL cancels 2020 Isobel Cup Final

There will be no 2020 Isobel Cup Champion

The NWHL has announced that the 2020 Isobel Cup Final between the Boston Pride and the Minnesota Whitecaps, which was postponed due to COVID-19, has been canceled. The highly-anticipated game was originally scheduled for March 13 in Boston at Warrior Ice Arena.

From the league’s release:

“We’re very disappointed for these two great teams and the fans that we came one game shy of completing our season, but this global health crisis transcends sports,” said NWHL Commissioner Dani Rylan. “On a personal level, our focus remains on looking out for each other and taking care of our families. As a league and business, everything we’ve done since the pandemic began, and everything we will continue to do, is centered on being well-positioned for a safe return to play.

Fans who bought tickets to the game are being offered a refund or have the option to have their tickets go towards Boston Pride season tickets for 2020-21. This is the first season in league history where the Isobel Cup will not be awarded. The Boston Pride earned the title of regular season champions with a record of 23-1-0.

NWHL commissioner Dani Rylan also noted that the league plans to begin its 2020-21 campaign at an undetermined date in mid-November. That would be at least five weeks later than the start of the 2019-20 season, which began on Oct. 5, 2019.
