NCAA Game(s) of the Week: BU vs. UConn

Samantha Carpentier-Yelle and the UConn Huskies square off against Catherine Foulem and the BU Terriers this weekend.

A home-and-home series between two top Hockey East teams are next up for our NCAA Division I women’s hockey Game(s) of the Week!

Boston University (5-1-3) vs. UConn (8-1-0) | Friday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. ET | Saturday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. ET

Both teams are off to quite the encouraging start in Hockey East play. The Huskies have so far had their best start in program history, and the Terriers have a big win against defending champion Northeastern to their name, as well as a victory over Providence in their last outing.

This will be their first time facing each other in 2020-21. They only played each other once in last year’s shortened pandemic season, a game which UConn won, 4-1. This is going to be a key series in terms of the Hockey East standings and playoff race. Both teams have shown so far that they’re serious this season about potentially making a run.

Players to Watch

Boston University: Catherine Foulem

The sophomore forward is starting to chip in more offensively of late; she just posted a multi-point game against Providence in her last outing. She’s a talented player who gives the Terriers some much-needed depth up front, key in a tight series against a conference opponent.

UConn: Samantha Carpentier-Yelle

The Huskies’ goaltender has been a huge factor behind their early-season success. While they have a good amount of skill at their skater positions, Carpentier-Yelle has turned in strong performances in close games to help the team pull out wins. She has a .927 save percentage and 1.81 goals-against average in conference games this year.

Our Thoughts

Gabs Fundaro: I’ve been impressed by what both teams have accomplished so far this year. It doesn’t surprise me so much from UConn, as they have so much talent returning in their seniors. BU, on the other hand, lost some really key players to graduation and the transfer portal, but their returning veterans (namely Courtney Correia, Julia Nearis, and Mackenna Parker) have done a great job stepping up and guiding the team to wins. However, I think the Huskies have the edge in terms of game-breaking talent. I think this’ll be a big weekend for them, and they’ll use that edge to their advantage in both games.

Anne Tokarski: I agree (as usual) with Gabs. I think this is a really good match-up, given we saw BU topple Northeastern a few weeks ago and then lose to Merrimack in the shootout — the same Merrimack that shut out UConn just three-ish weeks later. If UConn can get their offense going like they did against RIT and can keep their goaltending strong, I think this series is theirs to lose.
