Michelle Picard appears on NHL Network

Captain Picard to some, Captain Wildflower to others

Last night, Metropolitan Riveters captain Michelle “Shelly” Picard stopped by the NHL Network studio to promote the upcoming 2019 NWHL All-Star Weekend in Nashville. It was the second appearance by an NWHL star on the NHL Network in two days — Jillian Dempsey of the Boston Pride made her own appearance the day before.

We got to learn a little bit more about the Riveters captain in the short interview, including her history — and rivalry — with Dempsey. Picard also reflected on the Riveters 2018 Isobel Cup Championship and the unforgettable final against the Buffalo Beauts. But the most memorable moment of her appearance was the revelation of a nickname that she picked up playing in a men’s league: Captain Wildflower.

Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one who has a lot of questions.

In addition to being one of the NWHL’s five captains, Picard is also a 2019 All-Star and one of the best defenders in the league.

This is Picard’s third season with the Riveters, but first season as the team’s captain. Prior to beginning her NWHL career, she won a silver medal at the Sochi Olympics and three gold medals at the IIHF Women’s World Championship with Team USA.
