American icon Duggan will bring her expertise and experience to the PWHL.
Three-time Olympian and Captain America Meghan Duggan has joined the PWHL as a Special Consultant to Hockey Operations, the league announced Friday, November 15th.
"Meghan is a long-time advocate for women’s hockey, a proven leader and an accomplished executive at the top levels of sport," said Jayna Hefford, PWHL Senior VP of Hockey Operations in the league's press release. "As we continue to prioritize advancement and innovation in our game, Meghan will draw on her competitiveness, character, and a long list of hockey achievements to help move our league forward."
Duggan, 37, is a legend of the US women's game. As a player she won seven World Championships and two Olympic silver medals, but arguably her most famous moment came in 2018 when she captained Team USA to their first Olympic gold medal in 20 years. After her playing career wrapped up she shifted to a different role: since May 2022 she's served as Director of Player Development for the NHL's New Jersey Devils, having joined the organization a year prior.
"The opportunity to join the PWHL to continue to impact and help push the women's game forward is one that I am very excited about,” said Duggan in the league's press release. “This league and its players have just scratched the surface in terms of what they are capable of and I look forward to advising and assisting in any way that I can.”
Preparations for the 2024-2025 PWHL season are well underway, with puck drop on year two slated for November 30th.
