Emerance Maschmeyer traded to Montreal

Les Canadiennes de Montreal general manager Meg Hewings just transformed her roster days before the 2017 CWHL Draft. Montreal has acquired superstar goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer from the Calgary Inferno to complete a trade that sent Haley Irwin to the Inferno in 2014.

The trade leaves Calgary with veteran Delayne Brian in net. Genevieve Lacasse is on Hockey Canada’s centralization roster. One has to imagine that the Inferno are now in the market for another talented goaltender.

Les Canadiennes also added Maggie DiMasi and Nachi Fujimoto from the Boston Blades in exchange for a 6th and 7th round pick (the draft year will be determined at a later date). In a separate transaction Hewings dealt Brittney Fouracres to Calgary for future considerations.

Former Buffalo Beauts goaltender Amanda Makela was also moved today. Hewings sent Makela to the Toronto Furies to complete the deal that brought Jordanna Peroff to Montreal in 2015.

There’s no escaping the fact that today’s trades have made Montreal a better team. And Maschmeyer is right at the center of that.

“Emerance Maschmeyer is one of the world’s most promising young goalies and a respected teammate,” Hewings shared in the league’s press release. “After a breakout performance for Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, a storied university career with the Harvard Crimson, and an impressive performance in her rookie CWHL season with the Calgary Inferno, we’re thrilled to welcome her to Les  Canadiennes next season.”

It’s worth mentioning that longtime Canadiennes goaltender Charline Labonte will be 35-years-old in October. There has been some speculation that her career is drawing to a close. Maschmeyer now appears to be the heir apparent to Labonte’s throne in Montreal.
