Charge Lock Down Savolainen for Three Years
The 26-year-old veteran blueliner joins Danielle Serdachny with a three-year-deal with Ottawa.
The Ottawa Charge have signed Finnish defender Ronja Savolainen to a three-year Standard Player Agreement, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon. This will take the two-time Olympic bronze medalist through the 2026-27 season with Ottawa.
Prior to being drafted by Ottawa, Savolainen was a mainstay on Lulea HF in the SDHL, amassing 81 goals and 227 points in 258 games played. Her most recent campaign with them in 2023-24 earned her a No. 3 ranking amongst defenders in points scored (29) and a top ranking in goals scored (11), plus her sixth championship.
All of this bodes well for Ottawa, who struggled in multiple areas including goal scoring and special teams (both of which Savolainen can excel at). This is also the second three-year deal GM Mike Hirshfeld has signed, alongside first-rounder Danielle Serdachny (also a major special teams pickup). Overall, it definitely looks like the Charge are preparing well and addressing some major concerns ahead of puck drop for Year Two.
Terms of the deal are not to be disclosed per the PWHL Players Association.
