Pride acquire 1st overall pick in 2020 NWHL Draft from Toronto

The Pride land the top pick in tonight’s draft

As first reported by Marisa Ingemi, the Boston Pride acquired the first overall pick of the 2020 NWHL Draft from Toronto in addition to Toronto’s fifth round pick in exchange for three picks of their own. Boston sent their own 2020 first round pick (6th overall) and their first and second round picks in the 2021 NWHL Draft to move up in the first round.

This marks the third trade in Pride franchise history and the team’s first trade since the 2016-17. That deal also involved a first round pick, which initially belonged to the Whale but was acquired by Boston in the Zoe Hickel trade. Boston used that pick to select goaltender Katie Burt. This draft day swap is the first time in NWHL history a trade has been made that didn’t involve a player or a player’s signing rights. It’s also the first trade in the history of the NWHL’s Toronto franchise.

The 2020 NWHL Draft begins tonight at 7 p.m. ET with the first two rounds of the draft. The draft continues tomorrow with three more rounds.
