Let's be frank here: it's been a rough time lately to be an LGBTQ+-identifying person, let alone a queer hockey fan or hockey player, in today's society.
The past few years alone have seen a massive onslaught of attempts to censor media that represents the community, outlaw health care for trans youth, and try to shame us back into the closet. We look to hockey, the sport, in an effort to escape from the negativity outside; however, hockey, the culture, is no better, as a vocal minority of NHL players spearheaded a campaign to ban "statement jerseys" and theme nights that is heavily implied to have targeted Pride nights specifically the league itself briefly kowtowed and then walked back the ban. We have been let down by figures in the NHL and in the women's hockey space. But there are also people and groups to celebrate.
TIG wants to shine a light on organizations and leagues that not only embrace, but celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in all of its joy and glory. Here is a list of those inclusive leagues and organizations in one place, with due credit given to those who have preceded us in this endeavor. We aim to keep this a living document, and will edit as needed to keep it as up-to-date as possible. Please let us know if there are any we're missing.
We see you. We love you. We are you. And we will never stand for anything other than equity and respect.
