Hockey Canada announces 2022-23 summer showcase roster

142 players have been invited to the 2022-23 selection camps in Calgary

Last week, Hockey Canada announced the rosters for their 2022-23 summer showcase, taking place now through Aug. 14 in Calgary.

The players are divided into selection camps for the National Team and the Development Team, and then the U18 National Team. The training camp serves as an opportunity to evaluate the talent of players for this year’s teams and future teams. Most of the 142 players invited to the camp will not make this year’s team, but young players will have the opportunity to take large steps in their development by learning from senior players.

Corinne Schroeder

Corinne Schroeder has the best opportunity to dethrone one of last year’s national team goalies. I think she is a likely fourth goalie for the Canadian team this year. The young Manitoban recently capped off a successful NCAA career and signed with the Boston pride of the premier hockey federation. Schroeder played four seasons at Boston University and a final season at Quinnipiac, where she had a .951 save percentage in 29 games. Schroeder is a talented and consistent goaltender who I think Team Canada will look to develop as a backup goaltender of the future.

Karel Préfontaine

Karel Préfontaine is the youngest player at the national team selection camp at 17 years old. She is a solid forward with strong playmaking numbers combined with scoring ability. Préfontaine captained her minor hockey team averaging .42 points per game across bantam and midget. After moving to high school hockey, she averaged .92 points per game. She played six games at the 2022 world under 18 championships, scoring one goal and three assists. I think her style is conducive to learning from and watching a national team player like Sarah nurse. Prefontaine is committed to Cornell for the 2023-24 NCAA season.

Loren Gabel

Loren Gabel has a point to prove. She was not included on the 28-player pre-Olympic roster last year despite being one of Canada’s top young players. Gabel was a star at Clarkson University, setting the team record for NCAA career goals. She helped the team win two national championships and won the Patty Kazmaier Award in 2019. She is extremely fast and has the ability to convert, especially when using her speed to get in alone. Gabel will be looking to reclaim her spot on the national team.

Ava Murphy

Ava Murphy from Kitchener Ontario is coming off a strong world under 18 championship in June. The big defender has a booming slapshot which she used in the tournament’s gold medal game. Her shot was tipped for the game’s opening goal, and a one-timer midway through the 2nd doubled Canada’s lead. Canada would go on to win the game three to two. Murphy’s strong performance at last year’s tournament should secure her a spot on this year’s team. I think she’ll show in camp that she is a contender for a leadership role on the team.

Alexia Aubin

Aubin is an up-and-coming young player. She’s incredibly driven on the ice and has a great nose for the puck. Her tip in the gold medal game of last year’s world under 18 championships came in addition to the four assists she had in the tournament. Like Murphy, Aubin is a reliable pick to make this team. She will be looking to prove she’s ready to take on an expanded role as a top forward on team Canada.

Jocelyn Amos

Jocelyn Amos’ only goal of the 2022 world under 18 hockey championships was the most important goal of the tournament- it won the gold medal game. Despite COVID-19 limiting the number of games played in Ontario’s Provincial Women’s Hockey League, Amos has impressed as a well-rounded player in the small sample size. In her U22 season this year, she had 30 points in 29 games played. Amos will be one of the top three players on team Canada again this year.
