The Frozen Four is set

We’re down to the final four teams in Division 1 college hockey and getting here was quite the day of hockey. We had a losses avenged, single overtime, a double overtime, and an upset.

Northeastern defeats Wisconsin, 4-2

Goals
Northeastern: Katy Knoll (PP), Skylar Irving, Maureen Murphy, Alina Mueller (PP)
Wisconsin: Casey O’Brien, Brette Pettet (PP)

The rematch of last year’s National Championship went the other way this year as Northeastern took down the defending champion in a commanding fashion.

They essentially neutralized Wisconsin’s forward, that player, Daryl Watts, while showcasing the depth and goaltending that made them one of the top teams in the nation. It seemed like Wisconsin was going to make a run of a comeback when they opened the third period with a power play goal by Brette Pettet. But about halfway through the period, they took a penalty and then somehow left Alina Mueller all alone. The Swiss Olympian made them pay in a big way.

The Badgers continue to pressure and have solid chances, but goaltender Aerin Frankel (and the all of Northeastern frankly) shut the door time and time again to avenge their National Championship loss and send them to the Frozen Four.

Minnesota-Duluth defeats Minnesota, 2-1

Gabbie Hughes had herself a weekend. After scoring a hat trick in Thursday’s game, she scored the game winning goal to move the Bulldogs to the Frozen Four.

Yale defeats Colgate, 2-1, in overtime

For the first time in program history, Yale will move on to the Frozen Four. The Ivy League team avenged their loss in the ECAC Championship game in overtime.

Yale opened the scoring early in the first period before Colgate evened the score up in the same frame. They remained scoreless for the rest of regulation.

Early in overtime, Colgate thought they had scored but the goal was quickly waved off for goaltender interference. It didn’t take long for Yale to capitalize, and they did, with Tess Dettling grabbing a rebound in the high slot to send Yale to the Frozen Four.

Ohio State defeated Quinnipiac, 4-3, in a double overtime

With so much happening in women’s hockey, it’s like Ohio State and Quinnipaic wanted to make sure everyone watched their game by extending it an extra period and a few minutes. The absolutely chaotic game saw matching goals every period, Quinnipaic goaltender Corinne Schroeder seeing more than 70 shots, and a double overtime.

In the end, it was Clair DeGeorge just 2 minutes into the second overtime who sent the number one team in the nation on to the Frozen Four.
