PHF Goals of Week: Feb. 5-6

Thunstrom had a hatty and the Whale had the sweep

In the first weekend since the All-Star Break, there were a ton of goals. It seems like every time this league takes a break, they come back stronger the next week and try to make up for the time off. Either way, I will certainly take it.

Starting off on Saturday, the Whale headed to Boston to take on the Pride and what a game it was. Boston took the lead first with this goal by Wenczkowski to make it 2-1. Say it with me now, โ€˜we love a good water bottle pop.โ€™

Ultimately the Whale took the lead and took the game, 3-2 beating Boston. Kennedy Marchment gets the game-winning goal, shorthanded here.

Meanwhile the Beauts were in Minnesota taking on Allie Thunstrom and the Whitecaps. Taylor Turnquist gets her first goal of the season early in this game to make it 1-0 proving the Beauts struggles from before the All-Star Break were not over.

Thunstrom scored soon after, and then soon after again with this goal where she connected with Jonna Curtis who had five points on the night. It was one of many shorthanded goals that game as penalties plagued both teams.

After already claiming the seasonโ€™s leading goal scoring record earlier in the game, Allie Thunstrom continued to lay it on with her third of the game here, successfully completing the hat trick. This time, the goal was a power play goal, proving yet again, that special teams are crucial.

The final score on Saturday was 8-1 in favor of the Whitecaps, but Buffalo was able to avoid the shutout with the help of Diffendal on the power play here.

On Sunday, these two matchups were back at it again, with a lot to prove on both sides. The Beauts opened up the scoring and had a huge change of pace from Saturday despite not changing much to their lineup. History was made in the first period as Jenna Suokko scored, and became the first Finnish player in PHF history to score a goal.

This gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead. They would go on to beat the Whitecaps for the first time at TRIA Rink ever, 6-2 and grab a huge win after a rough loss on Saturday.

Finally, arguable the best goal of the weekend came from the Whaleโ€™s Janine Weber. Back turned to the goal, she backhand-bats in the puck to make it 2-0. They would ultimately win the game 6-1, sweeping the Pride in Boston.

The PHF action will be back next weekend as the Riveters take on Buffalo, and Minnesota will battle it out with Toronto. All four teams have huge potential to make some moves in the standings, or in Torontoโ€™s case, push the competition even further behind them.
