Just one game after Hilary Knight tied Cammi Granato’s World Championship scoring record, she passed it, becoming the leader in career goals scored at the IIHF tournament with 45.
The historic goal came at 3:17 of the second period to give the US a 2-0 lead over ROC. This was her second goal of the 2021 tournament.
Naturally, Brianna Decker assisted the goal, which made her the all-time US assist leader in World Championships play. She has 39 and passed legends Jenny Potter and Krissy Wendell.
This is Knight’s 11th World Championship appereance. She is also knocking on the door of all-time points leader at Worlds. She’s currently 4th with 77 points behind Granto (78), Jayna Hefford (83) and Hayley Wickenheiser (86). The next closest active player is, fittingly, Decker at 65 points.
US would go on to win 6-0 to stay undefeated - and unscored on - in preliminary play. In addition to Knight and Decker breaking records, three players scored their first-ever goal with the senior National Team: Britta Curl, Abbey Murphy, and Jesse Compher.
Their next, and final, preliminary game is Thursday, Aug 26 at 6 p.m. eastern against Canada, the other defeated team in Group A.
