Metropolitan Riveters all-star winger Kate Leary had a big game on Sunday against the Buffalo Beauts. Leary scored two goals in the first period — her 14th and 15th of the year — and her second goal was truly a thing of beauty.
Leary stepped in front of a Beauts’ point shot, stopping it cleanly with her stick, and then traveled up the ice with a copse of Beauts defenders in her way. Despite Buffalo’s efforts to slow her down, Leary dangled her way through the defense and scored an unforgettable goal on Tiffany Hsu to put her team up 2-0 in the first period.
Thanks in large part to Leary’s big first period, the Riveters went on to win the game by a score of 4-3. The highlight reel goal in question also made franchise history. Leary is now the first Riveter and the sixth player in NWHL history to score at least 15 goals in a season. She is second on the team in scoring with 26 points in 20 games, behind only Madison Packer (32).
