Today marks the second day of USA Hockey’s four-day Goaltending Development Program at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Mich. Ten of the best postcollegiate and collegiate goaltenders are training and are being mentored by Bob Corkum, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team; Steve Thompson, goaltending coach for the U.S. Women’s National Team; and Alli Altman, goaltending coach for the U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team.
Working alongside those coaches are Brianne McLaughlin, NWHL alumna and Olympic silver medalist; Laura Bellamy, who was recently promoted to associate head coach of the University of Minnesota–Duluth’s women’s team; and Larry Clemens, the director of High Performance Goaltending.
Corkum recently guided the USWNT to a gold medal finish in Finland at the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship. His goalies in that tournament were Alex Rigsby, Maddie Rooney, and Emma Polusny. All three of those netminders are in attendance for this year’s goalie camp.
Here is the full roster of the goalies attending this year’s camp:
Kennedy Blair | Mercyhurst University (CHA)
Katie Burt | Boston Pride (NWHL)
Aerin Frankel | Northeastern University (HEA)
Nicole Hensley | Buffalo Beauts (NWHL)
Abbie Ives | Quinnipiac University (ECAC)
Abbey Levy | Minnesota State University (WCHA)
Emma Polusny | St. Cloud State University (WCHA)
Lindsay Reed | Harvard University (ECAC)
Alex Rigsby | Calgary Inferno (CWHL)
Maddie Rooney | University of Minnesota Duluth (WCHA)
Polusny, Ives, Frankel, Burt, and Blair all attended last year’s Goaltending Camp, which was also attended by former NWHL Goaltender of the Year Katie Fitzgerald. It’s worth noting that this year’s camp has a different structure than last year’s camp. There were 18 goaltenders in attendance last year. This year USA Hockey’s release states that 12 goaltenders are in attendance, but only 10 of those goaltenders are listed publicly.
The top junior male goaltenders in the nation — including top 2019 Draft prospect Spencer Knight — are also attending the camp, but will be working with a different group of coaches and mentors.
The camp concludes on Sunday, May 19.
