Game 2 was markedly different from game one of the Rivalry Series. The first period alone saw five goals between the two teams. The second period had zero goals but plenty of US penalties as it seemed as if every time they left the box, they went right back in.
Alex Carpenter on the power play (Kacey Bellamy, Emily Pfalzer) at 7:03 in the first period
USA: 1 - CAN: 0
Carpenter gets the goals started with a wrister from the top of the circle on a power play.
Marie-Philip Poulin (Laura Stacey, Jamie Lee Rattray) at 8:47 in the first period
USA: 1 - CAN: 1
You can’t give Poulin that much room, pretty much ever.
Hannah Brandt (Sidney Morin, Hilary Knight) at 10:30 in the first period
USA: 2 - CAN: 1
A bit of puck juggling in front of the Canadian net gives Brandt an opening for the second US goal of the game.
Laura Fortino on the power play (Erin Ambrose, Marie-Philip Poulin) at 13:13 in the first period
USA: 2 - CAN: 2
Fortino one-times a power play goal as the equalizer, and fourth goal, in the first period.
Brianne Jenner on the power play (Natalie Spooner, Renata Fast) at 19:24 in the first period
USA: 2 - CAN: 3
In the final minute of the first period, Jenner gets one through the scrum in front of the US’s net to give Canada a lead.
Jamie Lee Rattray (Laura Stacey, Blayre Turnbull) at 7:06 in the third period
USA: 2 - CAN: 4
A tic-tac-toe passing play leads to Rattray’s snap of a goal. The US defense didn’t give Burt much help here either, and Markham Thunder forward gives Canada a two-goal lead.
Brianna Decker (Kendall Coyne Schofield, Hilary Knight) at 10:34 in the third period
USA: 3 - CAN: 4
The gif doesn’t show the work Knight put in behind the net to get Coyne Schofield the puck. But she set up this whole goal by keeping the puck away from a Canadian defender allowing Coyne Schofield to pick up the puck behind the net and Decker to slide in on the far side in a pretty pretty goal.
Katie Burt saved 26 in her US Senior Team debut. Geneviève Lacasse stopped 24.
The final game of the Rivalry Series is on Sunday afternoon at noon eastern in Detroit.
