2019 Women’s Worlds logo, schedule unveiled

Tournament to be played in Espoo, Finland from April 4-14

At its best, graphic design is elegant, striking, and conveys its nuances with effortless grace. The 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship logo, revealed Monday, encompasses all of this and more.

In addition to being a beautiful design, the logo holds an extra layer of significance: it was designed by Team Finland and Luleå Hockey/MSSK forward Michelle Karvinen.

The logo starts with the classic IIHF vertical rectangle and wordmark all cast in the national colors of blue and white. Front and center is a female hockey player in action. The player’s shadow casts the number 13 in tribute to Finnish hockey legend Riikka Välilä, Karvinen’s Naisleijonat teammate and one of the sport’s all-time greats.

Pine trees representing Finland’s natural beauty rise in the background while the pristine white bottom evokes the country’s nickname “Land of 1,000 Lakes.”

Karvinen, 28, has a Bachelors degree in graphic design and communications from the University of North Dakota. She works as a graphic designer in Luleå, Sweden, where she also plays in the SDHL.
