Jennifer Wakefield signs with SDHL’s Luleå HF

SDHL veteran moves north to a new team.

Team Canada forward and SDHL veteran Jennifer Wakefield has signed with Luleå HF, the club announced Thursday. She joins her Canadian Olympic teammate Meaghan Mikkelson as Luleå’s second major acquisition prior to the February 15 transfer deadline.

The Pickering, Ontario native is currently in South Korea preparing for her  second Olympics. She’s played in Sweden since 2014, when she  joined Munksund-Skuthamns SK for their playoff run. That team’s coach?  Luleå HF’s own Fredrik Glader.

”We are very happy to have a player like Wakefield in our lineup. She is a person with a good heart and a passion for the game,” Glader told The Ice Garden. “She will give the team more power and level up in the offensive zone with her shot and way to play.”

Wakefield  is a tough right-handed shot who’s already well-accustomed to the Swedish game after spending most of the past three seasons with Linköping HC in the SDHL. She helped Linköping capture the SDHL Championship title in 2014-2015, where she had 22 points in 15  regular-season games and nine points in five playoff games. She played 30 games with Linköping in 2016-2017, where she led the SDHL with 34 goals and was second in league scoring with 53 points.

The SDHL is currently on its Olympic break. Luleå resumes play on March 1.
