Meaghan Mikkelson signs with SDHL club Luleå HF

Defender will finish out the season in Sweden instead of returning to her CWHL club.

Veteran Canadian defender Meaghan Mikkelson has signed with the SDHL’s Luleå HF. She brings great defensive prowess to an already stacked blue line that includes the likes of Jenni Hiirikoski and Johanna Fällman.

”We are very happy to have her in our club,” Luleå head coach coach Fredrik Glader told The Ice Garden. “With great experience she can help our young girls take the next step [and help] our team every night.”

Mikkelson, 33, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist currently preparing for her third Olympic Games in PyeongChang. She spent several years in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, first with the Alberta Honeybadgers and then with the team’s later reincarnation as the Calgary Inferno. She led all defenders on the Inferno during the 2016-17 season with 15 points (five goals, 10 assists), when she was named the CWHL’s Defender of the Year.

In addition to her Olympic achievements, she’s won two NCAA championships, one World Championship gold medal and six silvers, and a Clarkson Cup as a member of the 2015-2016 Inferno. Her veteran presence and championship experience will no doubt be great assets to Luleå both on the ice and in the locker room.

Her brother Brendan also plays in the Luleå organization.
