PWHPA Podcast, Showcase & More!

Recapping a week of PWHPA news, including an SDPN podcast, Ottawa showcase, and charity game.

The PWHPA has been busy the last few weeks so lets get caught up with all their off ice on goings!

The Knoxy and Kax Show

The Steve Dangle Podcast Network (SDPN) announced Monday that a new show would be joining their network in partnership with the PWHPA. The Knoxy & Kax Show will run for ten weeks and star Liz Knox, a retired PWHPA player and current Team Harvey’s forward, Karell Emard. Promising amazing stories, the show will share the biggest personalities in the women’s game often overlooked. As the 2022 Beijing Olympics approach, the two will also break down the tournament’s action in addition to PWHPA games.

The SDPN is a recent extension of the wildly successful Steve Dangle Podcast. The podcast started in 2013, features Toronto Maple Leafs superfans Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde, and Jesse Blake, who break down the latest NHL news and headlines. The trio recently expanded their brand to include new shows featuring hockey personalities like Chris Johnston and Allan Walsh.

The SDPN have long been supporters of women’s hockey and, over the years, have featured guests from the PWHPA and PHF. This new show will be a serious step up in sharing women’s hockey allowing PWHPA players to showcase their voices off the ice. I expect The Knoxy and Kax show will quickly become one of the most popular women’s hockey shows on the internet.

PWHPA Ottawa Showcase

The Sonnet Showcase will bring the PWHPA to Canada’s capital for the first time. Four PWHPA teams will face off at the Steve Yzerman arena in Nepean February 26-27. Team adidas from Minnesota will play Team Sonnet from Toronto, followed by a matchup of teams Bauer from Boston and Harvey’s from Montreal. On the 27th, the teams will play championship and consolation finals. The showcase will be the first showcase of the year not to include the unbeaten Calgary, meaning a new team will win the showcase’s prize pot of money.

The game will be a homecoming for Ottawa natives Samantha Cogan of team Sonnet and Rebecca Leslie of Team Harveys. As junior players, Cogan was a Nepean Wildcat, Leslie an Ottawa Lady Senator.

Skate For The 22

On Saturday, January 22, the PWHPA’s Team Bauer played a charity hockey game against Danger Close, a recreational hockey team of veterans in the Boston area. The game supported Skate for the 22, a charity supporting veterans through hockey. On average, 22 US military veterans take their own lives every day, and the foundation works to change that by fostering community and team environments for veterans. Proceeds from the game will support the foundation’s work, including learn-to-play hockey programs for veterans. Team Bauer won the friendly tilt 10-5.

Congressional Hockey Challenge

The Congressional Hockey Challenge is an annual hockey game between US congressional members of staff and lobbyists. The game raises money for charities and causes, which this year will include the PWHPA. In a statement, The CHC said they support the PWHPA mission “to make hockey more inclusive for women today and for the girls of the next generation.”
