NCAA Fantasy Hockey Week 3: Post Weekend Standings

The rich get richer and the confused get, well, more confused

All games for this week are complete, so we have the final standings and stats for week 3.

The anonymous manager of House of Seven Gabels not only stays in the lead, but was the highest point-scorer this weekend with 26, a whopping nearly-six points ahead of Grant Salzano’s 1.21 GigaWatts with 20.65. House of Seven Gabels has opened up a ten-point lead over E. Peña’s Mokas Gals; then Frankel My Dear, I Don’t Give A Damn and Going Roque are a bit further behind at 82.6 and 81.1. After that only thirteen points separate fifth place (Peaky Grinders, 78 points) from 19th (The Mueller Investigation, 65.4). All this and the start of Ivy League play coming up!

All the standings are on the Summary tab of the results spreadsheet, including points scored this week and ranking of points scored this week. All the current rosters are on the Teams tab. As last week, the best way to find your own roster is probably to click on your team’s name on the Summary tab, then click on the little thing that pops up when you do that.

What happened this weekend?

  • File under unexpected: St. Lawrence took BC to overtime, twice, and lost in overtime, twice, using a different goalie each time. BC’s offense looks to be waking up thanks in large part to Minnesota transfer (and Daryl Watts’s high-school linemate) Lindsay Agnew ($12.70, 4.8 points this year) but they haven’t yet mastered getting the puck in the net. Both goals on Sunday came from defenders, Cayla Barnes ($43,50, 4.4 points) and Grace Bizal ($25.40, 5.7 points)
  • File under very unexpected: Cornell beat the Cameranesi- and Pflazer-less Buffalo Beauts 5-2 in a result that didn’t score any fantasy points for anyone, but should make us all wonder if we shouldn’t have picked more Cornell players. Lenka Serdar ($17.80), Madelynne Mills ($34.20), and Kristin O’Neill ($41.20) all had multi-point games. Marlene Boissonault ($39.50, 1 goal on 16 shots) and Lindsay Browning ($1.40, 1 goal on 19 shots) split time in net.
  • File under moderately unexpected: The usually not-that-good Minnesota State took Ohio State to overtime at home in the second of their two games, after losing the first 4-0. A lot of credit for that has to go to 6” 1’ freshman goalie Abigail Levy ($19.8, 6.6 points), who made 84 saves on 90 shots over the weekend and has emerged as the undisputed starter for the Mavericks. A sign of how relatively successful Minnesota State was at shutting down OSU’s offense is that the highest-scoring fantasy player for OSU this weekend was their goalie (Andrea Brändli, $17.50, 3.65 points this week).
  • File under probably expected: Wisconsin beat Minnesota-Duluth at home, 4-2 and 3-1, following Minnesota’s 4-2 and 2-2 results against UMD last weekend. Emily Clark ($44.70, 6.8 SP) was injured in the first game and didn’t play the second. Wisconsin outshot UMD 44-16 and 43-12 so the scores could easily have been more lopsided. Also expected: Minnesota rolled past St Cloud 6-2 and 4-1, with Minnesota outshooting their opponents 50-18 and 45-6 and both teams giving each of their top goalies one game.
  • File under definitely expected: Maine absolutely destroyed Sacred Heart, 8-0 and 8-0, with as far as I can tell, every single skater picking up a goal or assist at some point over the weekend. Vendula Přibylová ($18.30, 5 SP) scored no points in the first game, but had a massive five in the second, making her the highest scorer on the team in fantasy terms. Līga Miljone ($19.30, 5.9 SP), who played with her mother on the Latvian national team at the age of 15, was the highest scoring freshman of the weekend. Tereza Vaniššová, who’s been picked by eight of our managers, scored 2.2 fantasy points on the weekend, which isn’t bad in general but on this particular weekend put her 10th in scoring among Maine players.
  • File under I don’t know what I expected: Northeastern and Colgate split the series at Northeastern, 3-2 Colgate on Friday and 5-2 Northeastern on Saturday. Aerin Frankel ($29.60, 5.1 SP) was in goal for the loss for Northeastern, Brittany Bugalski ($21.10, $3.3 SP) was in goal for the win, and Julia Vandyk ($39.90, 6.6 SP) was in goal for Colgate for both games. Scoring was fairly balanced for both teams, with sophomore Veronika Pettey ($29.30, 6.6 SP) emerging both with most points on the weekend for both teams and as Northeastern’s leading scorer for the year.
  • Elsewhere: Providence took Holy Cross apart 5-0 in a battle of divine things. Mercyhurst handled Syracuse 4-2 and 1-0. Connecticut lost 5-3 to New Hampshire and then turned around and beat Holy Cross 7-2, in the first game this season in which Morgan Fisher ($15.20, 4.8 SP) didn’t get the start in goal for UConn. RPI split the series with the strongly favored Robert Morris, thanks in large part to the usual heroics from senior Lovisa Selander ($43.00, 9 SP) in net. Quinnipiac and Vermont tied twice, Penn State had two close victories over Union, and Cornell beat the Buffalo Beauts 5-2, which I know I’ve mentioned already, but still, are you kidding me./

Weekly awards

Individual Awards

  • Most points: Lovisa Selander (RPI, 5.2 points this week (WP), 9. points this season (SP)), from Vendula Přibylová (5 WP) and Līga Miljone (4.7 WP)
  • Most overlooked (highest scoring player who no-one picked): Vendula Přibylová (Maine, 5 WP, 5 SP)
  • Biggest boost (highest scoring player who only one manager picked): Briana Colangelo (UConn, 4 WP, 6.7 SP)
  • Biggest contribution (highest value of points this week * number of teams they’re on): Annie Pankowski (Wisconsin, 2.8 points * 13 picks = 36.4 total contribution)
  • Best Freshman: Līga Miljone (Maine, 4.7 WP, 5.9 SP)
  • Best Sophomore: Jesse Compher (BU, 4.1 WP, 5.3 SP)
  • Best Junior: Vendula Přibylová (Maine, 5 WP, 5 SP)
  • Best Senior: Lovisa Selander (RPI, 5.2 WP, 9. SP)
  • Best D: Alyson Matteau (Maine, 4.6 WP, 6.2 SP)
  • Best F: Vendula Přibylová (Maine, 5 WP, 5 SP)
  • Best Goalie: Lovisa Selander (RPI, 5.2 WP, 9. SP)/

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Přibylová’s 5 weekend points stay the season record for points scored by the Most Overlooked Player. Ella Shelton ($49.60, 10 SP) didn’t play this weekend, to give everyone else a chance, but look out for her next weekend.

Most improved: The scoring system subtracts points for penalties and so we have to recognize the Tarantinoesque contribution of Ashton Bell ($19.90, -0.6 SP) from Minnesota-Duluth. Bell scored negative points both of the previous weekends of the season for penalties including “dropping a piano on the head of an opposing player so they have piano keys instead of teeth where their teeth should be and then playing a tune on the piano keys which should have been teeth” and “decapitation.” (Check the game sheet, seriously.) This week Bell was moved to forward and away from sharp objects and scored her first goal of the season, which should delight our one manager who picked her, who I won’t name because she could fire me, but her name does begin with “Michell”.

Unironic most improved: I want to recognize Taylor Wemple from St. Cloud, who was picked by two of our managers despite scoring only 0.8 fantasy points on 23 games as a freshman last year. This year she’s 3rd in scoring from St. Cloud and 56th in overall scoring with 5.2 fantasy points, putting her at the top of the list of players who have already outscored what they cost. Even though St. Cloud had a tough battle against Minnesota last weekend, Wemple still placed on our team of the week. It’ll be fascinating to see if she can keep that pace up all season. St. Cloud faces Minnesota State twice next weekend in an intriguing matchup of good goalies.

Team of the week

As with last week, this is the team formed in accordance with the roster rules that scored the most points this last weekend.

Roster: Lovisa Selander (RPI, G, 5.2), Vendula Přibylová (Maine, F, 5), Līga Miljone (Maine, F, 4.7), Alyson Matteau (Maine, D, 4.6), Jesse Compher (BU, F, 4.1), Nicole Dunbar (UNH, F, 4.1), Taylor House (Quinnipiac, F, 4), Briana Colangelo (UConn, F, 4), Andrea Brändli (OSU, G, 3.65), Taylor Heise (Minnesota, F, 3.6), Abigail Levy (Minnesota State, G, 3.6), Courtney Vorster (Quinnipiac, D, 3.6), Lisa Bruno (OSU, D, 3.4), Taylor Wemple (St Cloud, D, 3.4)

Score: 56.95

Cost: 297.90 — and if I’d allowed more of them to be from Maine the cost would have been even lower.

Housekeeping

Only one housekeeping entry this week, but next week as the Ivies start play I bet a ton more errors will crop up.

  • Players whose names have been changed back on the stats sheet due to a mistake made by a computer that has since been corrected by a better computer: Emily Oden. Hooray!/

Trade deadline is Thursday, Oct. 18, 11:59 p.m. Eastern

I’ll do a separate trade tips post on Thursday. For now, please note that the following teams are not playing this coming weekend: Colgate, Quinnipiac, RPI, and Yale. Cornell, Dartmouth and Harvard only have one game each, and Brown, Connecticut, and Syracuse have three. Princeton kicks off their campaign with two games on the road at Wisconsin, which presumably seemed like a good idea at some point.

You can make one trade every week by letting me know via email at tigFantasyHockey@gmail.com. To trade, let me know who you’re selling and who you’re buying. Sales and purchases are made at that player’s current cost, which is on column K of the cost tab. Any spare dollars you have are noted in row 4 of your team’s entry on the teams tab and can be used for your trades.

Good luck everyone!
