Team Canada announces Laura Schuler as head coach for women’s national team

For the first time, a former women’s hockey national team member was named the head coach for the women’s hockey team at the Olympic Winter Games.

Laura Schuler was named the head coach for Canada’s Olympic team on Wednesday afternoon. She’s joined by her three assistant coaches, Dwayne Gylywoychuk and Troy Ryan as well as goaltending consultant Brad Kirkwood.

Schuler most recently coached Team Canada at the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Championships in Plymouth, Michigan, where she led her team to a silver medal after a heartbreaking overtime loss courtesy of a Hilary Knight snipe.

Schuler has been the head coach of Team Canada’s national team since 2015-16, and prior to that she coached the U-18 team that won gold in the 2014 IIHF U-18 Women’s World Championships. She was also a member of Canada’s silver medal-winning team in the 1998 Olympics and collected three IIHF Women’s World Championship gold medals as a national team member in 1990, 1992 and 1997.

Team Canada also dropped in a fun little tidbit at the end of the press release that announced that Hockey Canada’s centralization roster will be revealed tomorrow at 1 pm ET.
